Critical Notes

“It’s a heartwarming tale about a stubborn, short-tempered man with steadfast beliefs, strict routines and the feeling that everyone around him is an idiot – and no reticence about telling them so”, Alissa Simon, Variety

Directed by: Martin Scorcese, Starring: Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Neeson. 2h 40min. English.

Legendary director Martin Scorsese’s Silence tells the stunning and powerful story of two Christian missionaries (Adam Driver and Oscar® nominee Andrew Garfield) who travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Academy Award® nominee Liam Neeson) at a time when Christianity was outlawed. Director: Michael Dudok de Wit. 80 minutes. Rated G. No language.

The first international co-production from renowned Japanese animation giant Studio Ghibli enlists the talents of Oscar-winning Dutch animator Michaël Dudok De Wit for a wondrous story about the unlikely friendship between a castaway on a deserted island and an enormous sea turtle.

This gorgeously animated fable from Academy Award–winning Dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit marks the first international co-production from famed Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli. Shipwrecked on a deserted island, a lone man struggles to construct a raft, but his every attempt to leave the island is thwarted by an enormous sea turtle who seems intent on having him stay. Enraged, he attempts to kill the creature that is blocking his escape — but what transpires will instead open a new chapter in his life, one that will instruct him in the ways of companionship and lead him to understand that nature must take its course.
